Golf Can Be Cruel, Just Ask Tom Watson by Karen Nicoletti

Stewart Cink is the Open champion for 2009, but Tom Watson is the champion man! For all of us that were glued to our TV Screens on Sunday of The Open, what a day it was. I am not sure who wanted Mr. Watson to win that championship more, him or the entire golfing community young and old. I don't know about you, but I was so nervous and excited for him. When you watched that Open, did you notice how many different skills it takes to play golf well or to be a champion? Here you are on the 18th tee with a one stroke lead and you hit the perfect drive, then the perfect 2ndshot, but you walk away with a bogey. Mentally, physically, and emotionally you are drained. Think of all the things that were going through his mind.

Tom turned back the time and it was truly amazing to watch. What did I get out of it? A 59 year old man can still be in contention in an athletic sport. If you Feel you can do it, you can. For all golfer's young and old you should look at this and learn a great lesson. If you want something bad enough no matter what the age GO FOR IT!. Age is only a number. The history that would have been made if Tom won is incredible. The conversations that have taken place with old and new golfers after this Championship have been priceless. After it's all said and done, Stewart Cink deserved to win this Championship. He had a lower score and that's golf! Stewart Cink's life will be changed forever; this win wasn't going to change Tom Watson's life. One of his dreams was going to come true just like the five previous Opens he won.   What a putt on the 18th hole Cink made for birdie. Have you all been out practicing your putting? Great putting lowers scores and wins tournaments. It was so much fun to watch the Open. It reminded me how cruel golf can be sometimes. So follow your dreams and never give up life is to short... One of the things that Tom Watson hoped for was his peers would say he was one heck of a golfer. That he proved for the history books!

"Golf's Most Important Lesson" Surpasses 10,000 Views

Anyone familiar with my teaching philosophy knows how much I focus on solid contact.  A few months ago I uploaded a video to YouTube called "Golf's Most important Lesson" that gives key concepts and drills to understand how to hit the ball solidly.  This video explains how "You lifted your head" is a myth.

This video just surpassed 10,000 views making it our most successful serious video lesson ("The Proper Way to Throw Your Club" is approaching 2,000,000 views).  I have posted the video below for you to watch if you haven't seen it already.

P.S. Please help me pass this video to your golfing friends who need to hit the ball better.

O. R. Smith Gives an Old Rules Mental Golf Lesson

The mental side of golf is so essential to success on the golf course.  The New Rules of Core Mental Toughness that I wrote with Dr. Rick Jensen are available at http://www.newrulesgolf.com/ and in the downloadable e-book "The New Rules of Golf Instruction".  The essential mental skills can be learned and get to the true cause of a better mental game.  The Old Rules sports psychologists and teachers reel off surface/quick fixes like deep breathing and "be your own best friend".

Our Old Rules golf instructor O.R. Smith gives a mental lesson to Hank Headcase that can best be described as overwhelming.  Watch our newest O. R. Smith segment below.

Great Golf from Jean Reynolds leads US Women's Open

I was up at Saucon Valley with Jean on Tuesday and we had a productive practice session on her golf swing and short game.  The practice round was also productive.  We talked about staying in the same peak mental state that has been the key to her great year and I prepared her for the interview when she was leading the Open after the first round.  Lo and behold she held the lead for much of the day and finished the day tied for second with Christie Kerr and Lorena Ochoa.

A good start to a great week at the US Women's Open.  Watch Jean's interview after the round at the US Open website.  She was ready for all the questions the media had for her.  Keep an eye out for her tomorrow as she will be playing in the afternoon during the ESPN coverage.
