On Tuesday, September 22 we completed the $10,000 Reynolds Red Zone Challenge. Congratulations to Jim Thorne who won the Challenge and will receive the Grand Prize. Jim will be treated like a Tour Player during his full fit at the TaylorMade Kingdom and will take home a brand new custom fit set of TaylorMade golf clubs. We would also like to congratulate the other 7 finalists.
The 9-hole 100 yds and in tournament on Monday, cut the field down to the final 4. Because of weather our 4 finalists came back on Tuesday afternoon to hit 2 shots each in our 6 short game test categories. The score was very close coming down to a final putt by Jim Thorne that gave him the win. We had some refreshments and awarded the prizes. Everyone played well and seemed to have a great time!

On Friday, August 28, nationally recognized performance consultant and sports psychologist Rick Jensen spoke to a packed room at the Reynolds Golf Academy. Jensen, who is a long-time friend and advisor of Director of Instructor Charlie King, presented his thoughts on "Taking Your Golf Game to the Next Level." The high-energy talk focused on the importance of learning motor skills the right way - through practice. Jensen warned that learning a swing through the "old rules" of golf would only provide a temporary fix for a long-term problem. The fallacy of traditional teaching lies in trying to mimic a "perfect" swing through studying videos of professionals. Dr. Jensen argued that prescribing to the "new rules" of golf (made popular by Charlie King) would prove beneficial to a lifetime of improvement. By understanding the essentials of a good swing, and realizing why your swing isn't working, you create a solid foundation upon which to build a better golf game. And to build motor skills that truly work, you must commit to and embrace one training methodology from one teacher. It is this dedication to practice that will eventually lead to success on the course...the final step in "Taking Your Golf Game to the Next Level." Dr. Jensen warns that too many times golfers see a tip in a magazine and take it straight to the course, thus skipping the vitally important step of practicing and developing motor skills.
Dr. Rick Jensen is the author of Drive to the Top: 5 Timeless Business Lessons Learned from Golf's Greatest Champions, and is gratefully credited by King as the man who talked him out of becoming a tour player (he's very happy as a teacher). Dr. Jensen's clients have included more than 50 touring pros on the PGA, LPGA, and Champions Tours, plus other champions from Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and tennis pros from the WTA. Upon arrival at Reynolds Plantation, Jensen remarked, "I've traveled through the area many times, and unbelievably never made a stop at Reynolds. This place is incredible. As soon as I made it through the gates, the wheels in my head began turning like crazy. The possibilities of this place!"

I have been giving you updates of Jean's progress through these blog posts. The Final Futures Tour event of 2009 ended on Sept. 6 and afterwards there was a ceremony to award the Top Ten finishers with their LPGA Tour cards. Jean finished 2nd on the money list after jockeying back and forth between first and second with Mina Harigae from mid-season on. She is fully exempt for 2010 on the LPGA Tour season and is currently taking a much needed break to relax and recuperate.
Jean's improvement is significant. She went from $10,000 in 2008 on the Futures Tour to $80,000 in 2009. That is moving from 50th on the money list to 2nd. That does not include the $42,000 she made for her finish at the Women's U. S. Open.
There are several lessons here.
- Perserverence - Learn from every situation and don't give up if you have early disappointments.
- Peak State of Emotion - Jean had fun this year. She looked forward to every day of competition. She was not worried, scared or fearful.
- Beliefs - Jean believed in her swing and we shifted several beliefs about what golf competition means and "why" she wants to do this for a living.
- Technique and Skill - We worked on her understanding her swing so she could self diagnose while at a tournament. We also worked on competitive short game practice drills to make each practice as close to the actual tournament as possible.
Congratulations to Jean from the Reynolds Golf Academy. Jean is truly a success story. You could be next.

You may not have heard of Henry yet, but you should and you will. Henry is a pioneer in the way to set up a program that leads to golfers reaching their potential. He was my expert contributor for the chapter in "New Rules of Golf Instruction" about successful programs.
Henry has just come out with a book worth looking at if you have a junior golfer in your life looking to get better or you want to be the best parent for your child you can be. It's called "Journey to Excellence" and is available at amazon.com click here. Henry gives you the secrets to the ultra-successful Canadian program that he heads up.
The fruits of Henry's labor are showing up now with Matt Hill winning the NCAA Men's Golf Championship and many others coming onto the golf scene. I hope you get insights into Henry's philosophy from the interview below.

The physical attributes and limitations each of us has plays a determining factor in the way we most effectively swing a golf club. In "The New Rules of Golf Instruction" we have a chapter on Golf Fitness and how important it is to your overall success. Below you will find a video I did recently of the 5 checkpoints that give golfers and their teachers the information for any adjustments necessary for our golf swing. One size does not fit all. Old Rules Model and Method instruction does not take these physical checkpoints into account. Pass this onto your golfing buddies. They may need to know this.
